Nomad Southeast Trip, Day 9: Ormond Beach to Everglades

December 29, 2018

Our plan for the day was to spend the morning at the beach for a few hours before driving down to Flamingo campground at Everglades National Park. The morning was chilly and misty and we also decided that maybe it wasn't such a great idea to get wet and sandy before driving 5 hours. Nobody wanted to play in the water anyway. Instead, we enjoyed another beachside meal.

Bagels & cream cheese with bananas! We just snagged everything from our hotel.

Soooooo tired! Between kids coughing and the awful bed, I hardly slept the night before.

Cactus at a beach in Florida! Who'd have thought?

Yes, even Florida has jacket weather.

Beach Racers
"On March 28, 1903, Ormond Beach was the site of a thrilling one-mile race between pioneer auto-builders. The Hotel Ormond Challenge Cup pitted Alexander Winton's red Bullet against Ransom E. Old's Pirate, driven by engineer H. T. Thomas. Winton and his heavier Bullet barely won--the recorded time 75 seconds, or 48 mph. Another winner was Ormond Beach, soon famous for its sand racecourse and world speed marks."

We stopped at the cemetery in Ormond Beach before leaving. For fun. Because I like that.

I've never seen burials like this.

Confederate States of America soldiers were marked with the CSA star.

Then we headed south.

Landfill mound with tons of birds swirling over it.

So many things got re-planned from my original trip plan that we ended up doing a lot more driving and feeling like Katie's face. Samson kept our spirits up, though.

We arrived at Flamingo Campground with enough daylight left to set up our tent. The kids had fun running around, helping with tent construction, and unloading the van. They were very excited to be camping!
